Emergency Driving and Identification Credential Extension:

Effective immediately, the Idaho Transportation Department has extended all Driver’s Licenses, Driver’s Training Permits, Instruction Permits, Commercial Learner’s Permits, Identification Cards, and Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDL) without hazmat endorsements that are expired or will expire between March 1, 2020 and May 31, 2020, to be valid until June 30, 2020. CDL holders will still need to comply with medical certificate requirements to be considered valid.

For CDL holders with a hazmat endorsement or who are not comfortable working with an expired license, the department is working with county DMV offices to setup appointments to allow CDL renewals. Please contact your local DMV office first to see if they have any appointments available. If your local office is unable to make an appointment for you and you have an immediate need related to your CDL, please call 208-334-8000.

Emergency Vehicle Registration and Temporary Handicap Placard Extension:

Effective immediately, the Idaho Transportation Department has also extended all Vehicle Registrations and Temporary Handicap Placards that are expired or will expire between March 1, 2020 and May 31, 2020, to be valid until June 30 2020. This extension applies to all registrations issued at a county office (includes passenger, commercial, non-commercial, and farm registered vehicles).

At this time, the extension does not apply to registrations issued directly by the department or Ports of Entry (includes Full Fee or IRP registered commercial vehicles). New issuances and renewals of these registration types can be done online.

Please be aware that the department is not issuing any reprinted credentials as a result of these extensions. If you would like a new credential we encourage citizens check if you are eligible to renew online or check to see if your local DMV is currently open. We have notified law enforcement and TSA of this extension.

All of our online services are available and we again strongly encourage people who qualify to take advantage of them. This extension will not provide you with a discount on any fees when the time comes to have your credentials renewed.

If you are not able to renew online and your local DMV is closed, we would highly recommend you print and carry a copy or save a copy on your device of this emergency notice, a printable version is linked below.

Emergency Allowance for Dealers to issue 60 day Temporary Registration when selling a vehicle:

Effective immediately the Idaho Transportation Department is allowing all Idaho licensed vehicle dealers to issue 60 day temporary registration permits for any vehicles sold between March 17th, 2020 and May 31st, 2020. This allowance is only for dealership customers who have just purchased a vehicle from the same dealer issuing the temporary registration.
