In our ongoing effort to protect our community from crime, Sheriff J. Walt Femling recommends senior citizens and people with disabilities use DIRECT EXPRESS to protect themselves from financial crime.
Offered by the U.S. Treasury Department DIRECT EXPRESS allows citizens receiving Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments to direct deposit onto a prepaid DIRECT EXPRESS Debit MasterCard. The card has no sign-up fee, no monthly fees and can be used to make purchase, pay bills and get cash at thousands of locations nationwide. The card is recommended by the Treasury and the Social Security Administration as an easy and safe alternative to paper checks.
In 2007, nearly 60,000 U.S. Treasury issued paper checks, totalling $56 million dollars, were fraudulently endorsed and more than 700,000 checks were reported lost or stolen. Switching from paper checks to electronic payments is a quick wasy and safe way to prevent theft from the mail or on the street. Electronic payment is also convenient. The money is credited to your MasterCard account on payment day each month, so there’s no need to wait for the mail or to worry about cashing a paper check.
To sign up for Direct Express, call the toll free GO DIRECT helpline at (800)333-1795 (or for assistance in spanish call (800)333-1792). You can also sign up online at www.GoDirect.org (or in spanish at www.DirectoASuCuenta.org). Go Direct is also available at most local banks, credit unions or Social Security Administration offices.
